One of my responsibilities as Assistant Managing Editor was to create the covers for each week's paper. Front page stories were voted on by the editorial staff, and photo/graphic ideas were discussed. The Managing Editor and I would collaborate further with the Photo Editor to plan out exactly what we wanted on the cover and determine if we needed to plan a shoot and allow for editing time.
Every cover includes the issue's date, volume, and issue number, the front page story's title and author credits, front page image credits, and additional pullout stories, determined by myself and the Managing Editor.

Above Left: Photo Editor took a portrait of a refugee student, then I took out the background and put in a map of her home country, Thailand.
Above Middle: Under the direction of the Photo Editor, I got to shoot this cover. I took multiple long-exposure shots of students entering the Testing Center on campus, then I went and layed them on top of eachother in Photoshop, adjusting saturation and contrast to bring out the ghosted students.
Above Right: Under my direction, the Photo Assistant Editor took photos of staff members holding different objects that represent service, then I removed them from their backgrounds and arranged them into the final cover.

Above Left: The Photo Editor retook an old photo of the Jacob Spori Building, making sure to line it up as much as possible. I then took the photos, lined them up, and put the newer photo in a bold "130". Shadows and outer glow were added to make contrast and help the number pop.
Above Right: Layout for this cover changed due to the breaking news about the end of Scroll's print era. I looked through photo archives of the past few years to find photos that show what kind of things Scroll reports on (General Conference, community activities, student life, campus administration, etc.) and created a collage.

Above Left: I looked through the Scroll's graphics catalog and pulled things that had to do with innovation, then laid them out to fit within the cover's restraints. This story broke the news that one of the buildings on campus (the Oscar A. Kirkham Auditorium) would be torn down, so I made a graphic of that building (lower left corner of the cover).
